The Backpack Project
Each December, we deliver care kits to people experiencing homelessness in Wake County, North Carolina through our landmark initiative, The Backpack Project.
Each backpack is dedicated to the memory of a loved one lost too soon. A letter written by that person’s family is included with each backpack as a tribute to their loved one. Writing these letters is a cathartic act that helps families release their love and share it, allowing it to live on as service to others. For the backpack’s recipients, the letters help to create a personal connection and remind them that they too are capable of being loved.
Each care kit backpack includes essential supplies such as:
Survival gear (emergency blankets. flashlights)
Warm clothing items (hats, socks, gloves)
Health and hygiene items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, hairbrushes)
Food (eating utensils, cans of food, power bars, bottled water)
